An Engineered Injustice Philadelphia Legal William L Myers Jr Adam Verner Books
After reading the author's first book I knew I had to read this when it was released so I got it yesterday and finished it today. Let me say this now, if you like legal thrillers you have to read this book and the first one, A Criminal Defense. I couldn't put the fist one down and this one was no different and believe it or not I think this one was even better. While it starts a little slow to build the story and characters it quickly picks up the pace as the plot begins to twist and turn on it's way to the end. I hope Mr. Myers has a long career ahead of him as an author because his stories are gripping and his writing style is excellent, I couldn't put down either of his novels when I started them and look forward to many more.Tags : Amazon.com: An Engineered Injustice (Philadelphia Legal) (9781543600322): William L. An Engineered Injustice Philadelphia Legal William L Myers Jr Adam Verner Books Reviews
As a former resident of Northeast Philadelphia, I must say that the author has captured the city perfectly. For instance, in describing the "Criminal Justice Building", I have been there for jury duty, znd he has nailed it. As a devotee of Courtroom drama movies going as far back as "Wittness for the Prosecution," this plot and characterization is every bit as good as any Perry Mason, or even "Lincoln Lawyer"
All the necessary plot boxes are checked off a valiant, but imperfect defense lawyer, an inescapable situation for a sympathetic client, a tough as nzils investigator, who takes the usual licking and keeps on ticking.
Do not miss this one, it is a truly exciting read that you won't want to put down.
What first attracted me to this book was its plot- an Amtrak train crashes into a “track-vac” piece of equipment. Was it an accident, or was it sabotage? The sabotage issue comes midway through the book when it was discovered that 1) the maintenance vehicle was moved mysteriously from Track 2 to Track 1, and 2) during the playback of the videos, each of these show that shots were fired from a remote location, into the locomotive’s windshield, and two men are seen fleeing the site right before the train impacts the maintenance vehicle.
As a part of this scenario is a young lawyer named Vaughn Coburn. The engineer of the train is his cousin, Eddy Coburn. we learn that they grew up together, that they trained in Eddy’s father’s gym, that as teens they drag-raced their muscle cars, and that Vaughn’s car swerved to avoid a police car, but Eddy’s swerved and crashed, and that the police car crashed, killing the police officer. Vaughn leaves the scene of the accident but Eddy gets caught, tried and convicted, spending three years in jail while cousin Vaughn goes to college and becomes an attorney after watching his cousin get lousy service from his attorney during the course of the trial. So, long story short, Vaughn takes on the case as a debt to his long-suffering cousin Eddy. Vaughn finds work with a prominent firm run by Susan and Mick. They have a private investigator named Tommy. Susan was hurt on the train. So was Eddy, who was really hurt. The use of nicknames throughout effectively reduces the professional stature of these players to mere kids on a playground.
When the reader finds out who is behind this sabotage, the book takes a turn for the worse in terms of credibility. The background of the prominent personal injury attorneys, both huge in Philadelphia, as to why and wherefore of this train wreck, is baffling. Couldn’t the author have sought out a more profound villain?
There is a part of the plot whereby a notorious gangster, James Nunzio, known by all in this piece of literary junk food as Jimmy Nutzo, lost his son Alexander in the train wreck. So, as this cliche goes, Nunzio is out for revenge against the guilty parties. No worse stereotypes than Nuncio or his sidekick Johnny Giacobetti.
The attention to detail in this book is confounding as well, from the drone that is discovered that filmed the train wreck, to the discovery of the video showing Eddy dodging bullets in the cab right before the train crashed. Several of the women in this book, who should be major figures and are, get little respect for their seemingly professional demeanor.
If there is anything this book does have going for it, it’s that it’s pretty fast-paced, and not without its elements of suspense. Will Vaughn win his case against all odds? Will Laurie, and attorney for the villainous Balzac, escape with her life? The obligatory trial happens. I won’t give the results away.
The book reads, overall, like it was written by a 13 year-old. Language is simple, females treated like stereotypes in the imagination of a teenage boy, Balzac’s character, for example, a caricature of a greedy lawyer, complete with expensive suits, pretentious mansions, and expensive cigars- and an all too obvious taste for mayhem. Dialogue does not befit that of intelligent players. That it was written by a lawyer turned author?
I got this book on special from . The price was the best thing about this book. I didn’t like this piece of literary junk food. Even at its occasional bargain price, it’s a risk.
This book was such a good read! Good court room drama and characters you care about. No slow parts. Wish it were longer because the next one doesn’t come out until February 2919!! Great new author. Enjoyed both books so far!
Well my, my, my! What a way to start the 2018 reading season off with a legal thriller so exciting, it’s literally begging Hollywood to turn this novel into a major feature film!
Talk about ripped from the headlines? A catastrophic train derailment not only tore up the tracks and anything that came within inches of its wrath, but destroyed the lives that it carried within its cars. These passengers were thrown about like clothes tumbling in a dryer. Some came out with major injuries, while others lost their lives right upon impact.
What on earth could have caused this derailment? If you were to ask Eddy Coburn, the engineer of Amtrak 174 train, he’d tell you he can’t remember what caused the accident. For you see, Eddy sustained life threatening injuries and was placed in an induced coma due to his brain swelling. The doctors didn’t want him to wake up or try to move while they tried to put his body back together again. His wife was beside herself with grief for the pain her husband was in and all those lives that would forever remain changed.
Of course, the media became frenzied with the story and trying to figure out who and/or what caused this derailment? But it didn’t take long to figure out who would ultimately be blamed for this tragedy. Yes, you guessed it, the engineer, Eddy Coburn. While the media continued to spin the story in every direction it would bend, Kathy, Eddy’s wife, called the only person she knew would be able to help her family out. Enters, Vaughn Coburn, cousin to Eddy.
Vaughn is a brilliant attorney working on his cases never dreaming that a matter this huge would end up in his lap. When he got the call, he had to answer. This, for Vaughn, was a no-brainer. Eddy is family for God’s sake and there wasn’t any way he was going to let his cousin fry for this. After he visits with Eddy and his wife to get an assessment of what he was dealing with, it will soon become very clear to the reader that this case isn’t going to be so cut and dry after all. There are forces so strong that you will not see the circumstances coming.
Well Alright! we’ve got a good thriller now! Man, Oh Man was this book good! I could not get enough of this story line. If you thought Myers outdid himself with his last novel, his newest one is going to knock your damn socks off for real. Myers is an exceptional writer and he puts the story right up in your face and you just can’t ignore or hide from what is happening. I became so frustrated with the bullshit that was happening to Eddy, I hated when I had to stop reading because I couldn’t wait to find out what the system was going to do to him next? These characters were so lifelike, raw, gritty, telling, witty and vicious. Myers didn’t miss a trick in this latest installment. There’s a little bit of everything going on in here and I couldn’t control my excitement. This novel gave my mind quite an orgasmic stimulation, I hated when the story ended. When a book makes you feel that good, you already know it will last with you for years to come.
What an outstanding read! This, by far, was one of the best legal novels I’ve read. The story is so enticing and with Myers’ legal knowledge brings to life a story so horrible, yet so intriguing, you will not be able to put this down! If Hollywood doesn’t come knocking on Myers door soon, I don’t know what they’re waiting on? This would be a blockbuster for real! Awesome, Awesome read!
