I enjoyed this book, and if you're looking for some quick humor, this is a great book. Because it's essentially several short satiric passages, you can read the whole thing at one like a normal novel, or you can read it one part at a time, like a collection of short stories. My favorite was the series of Christmas cards from the Hansons.
Because this was written awhile ago, some of the info is a little dated, but still, very amusing. I can only wish he'd write a new one!
I'm a 17 year old girl and this is one of THE best books I've ever read! I am a HUGE fan of The Daily Show and Jon Stewart, so I was pretty sure I'd like this book, and I was SO freakin right. It's hilarious! And so accurate! Jon Stewart is brilliant with these essays. It normally takes me a while to read a book, but I finished this book really fast. I couldn't stop reading it! I actually got yelled at a couple of times in class for reading it while the teachers were talking, but it was so funny! I highly recommend this book to ANYONE that doesn't mind a little offensive humor. I dunno why people think it's mean. It's not like Jon Stewart is saying offensive things about them. He's talking about well known celebrities, and is OBVIOUSLY kidding. I am so glad I bought this book.
Stewart's book is smart, tight, witty, and spot-on when he goes for aggressive satire. His most brutal parody is Hitler the Larry King Interview, which might be offensive if it wasn't EXACTLY what Hitler would say today on such a show! His re-telling of the Last Supper from the point of view of a bitchy waiter was also a great new take on an old story.
However I couldn't help drawing strong parallels to Woody Allen's books (Getting Even, Side Effects, Without Feathers) which predate Stewart's by 20-35 years. Their intellectual prose voices are eerily identical in places, and they both have an affinity for replacing setup-punchline with setup-non sequitor (to great comic effect). In particular, Stewart's "Cult" scene seems almost stenciled directly from Allen's "My Apology" (in which the authors imagine themselves as the leader of a bizarre cult and Socrates, respectively, and then try to talk their way out of getting killed.) Like Stewart, Allen also wrote a fish-out-of-water story featuring Van Gogh he re-wrote Vincent's letters to his brother as if they were both dentists. In Stewart's more contemporary version, he sends a virtual Vincent to match wits with the verbal showmanship in real chat rooms.
So, in short, Stewart comes across as a very talented and perhaps a bit more topical Allen protege. But if you like this, and you have not read Without Feathers, shame on you!
I love this book, and hopefully Jon Stewart goes back to writing more stuff like this when he leaves the Daily Show.
I bought this for my roommate for Christmas, and it just wasn't in "good" condition by any stretch of the term. It looked like it'd been folded in half, and left like that for a year. I was disappointed because I thought I might be able to get away with pretending like it was a new book, but no chance. Other than that -- prompt shipping, all the words were in the right places, etc. etc.
so weird and brilliant. a really interesting insight into jon's creativity outside of politics, though there is of course spot on commentary.
As funny as Jon Stewart is on TV, he's even funnier in print. The man's a comic genius. I just kept thinking as I was reading, "How does he think this stuff up?" He skewers some pretty sacred cows in this book, like the Kennedys, who I usually don't like to see raked over the coals because I like them, but I couldn't help laughing at his portrayal of their overpopulation and exaggerated athleticism. I think even the Kennedys would have to laugh at this story. A good, quick read that will make you laugh from the belly.
Stewart said recently in an interview that his brain defaults to comedy and it couldn't be any more obvious than in these selections. I think we sometimes think all his stuff (except the interviews) is written for him but it is clear he has the intellectual depth and agility to produce material for an encyclopedia.
Maybe that is the next project after his fake history textbook? An online fake encyclopedia?? Oh wait there's Wikipedia.
Get this book, put it in your guestroom like I did. You overnight guests will try to steal it. Catch them and urge them to buy their own copy for their own guestroom.
