Teilo. The fairy-king. A story that Phoebe had been told as a child, something that her alcoholic mother had believed in until her death, in a bathtub of water surrounded by iron and other objects repellent to the fairy world. And there is a legend that says, in a town called Reliance, an entire village mysteriously disappeared one day. There, Phoebe knows, her boyfriend Sam's sister, Lisa, also mysteriously disappeared when she was 12 years old. She believed in fairies, in Teilo, and that he would come take her away with him. But what really happened to Lisa fifteen years ago, and what is the connection between that and Sam's strange cousin Evie who knows more than she's letting on? Partly written from Lisa’s perspective, and partly pieced together by Phoebe fifteen years later, Don't Breathe a Word is an equally exciting and terrifying tale for anyone who's ever believed in a fairy world, or the dark shadow man who lurks behind doors and at the corners of our vision. Lisa is taken by The King of the Fairies...or was she? Set in present day, told by Phoebe, whose boyfriend's sister was lured away into the woods behind their house, alternating with Lisa's story, 15 yrs ago.
Dark fairies, disfunctional families, and crazy twists of clues, I enjoyed the book and once getting past the first 20-or so pages of poorly edited amateurish writing, I read it in a day and a half.
I love the story line and the creepy, luring, watching tone this book has. However, the meandering trips to nowhere and all the symbolism was disorganized. I had so many questions while reading each scene and saying , wait. What? Why would she do that, or why is the character acting inconsistent and then never really getting an explanation.
Still, very cool concept and story and I do highly recommend it for a quick read.
Right away this book grabbed my attention, and actually held it until the end, but that's just it, the book literally just ends, there is no resolution. I don't mind books that don't have a "happy" ending... but this one there is no ending I turned the page thinking there was more, but I was mistaken. I was so disappointed after reading it, I felt I had to call and tell everyone I was raving about this book to and tell them not to read it. Lesson learned, finish books before reccomending them.
Woahhhh. This book took me on a ride! Author Jennifer McMahon knows how to deliver a creepy story that thrills! This book is beautifully written and successfully weaves a story about love, family secrets, and fairytales! I fell in love with this book from page 1 and couldn’t put it down until I finished all 447 pages. Readers be warned this book is filled with the unexpected and none of your questions will truly be answered until the very last page… if at all.
I highly recommend this book to fans of suspense, thrillers, dark fairytales, and horror. That’s a lot of genres put together, I know. BUT, McMahon DOES it in this book. She has quite the imagination. I am an instant FAN of her work and cannot wait to grab another in the near future!
Genre Mixture of horror, thriller, suspense, mystery, and fantasy.
Price Range KINDLE $7.99 – PAPERBACK $12.54
Overall Rating 5 Stars (well, I would give it a six)
Recommendation Looking for a good thriller, mystery, horror, or fantasy book? Try this one! You get a combination of ALL!
I would have made it 6.5 stars but there is no way to do so. This book It as full of twists and turns and the ending is a stunner. My advice to anyone reading this have a notebook so you can draw the character tree .....there are a lot of characters and one you think is a good guy might surprise you and there are a lot of characters and it is so interesting I had to because I needed to keep characters straight in my head. It is well written, and the steel trap mind of our intrepid author keeps surprising all the way to the end; and left a tiny out to have a sequel??? I felt any surprises were well within most everyone's comfort zone once you get past the initial shock it. It was a book I had to finish it, by 1 am last night, under the covers, ( thank you makers, I love my Fire and that I can dim the light to practically nothing so as not to upset the Hubs or the cat, while reading into the wee hours. If you like word puzzles, mysteries, a lot of suspense and a little of horror (human monsters not aliens) you will like this book.....no overt XXXsex!
First, I need to say that I bought this as an e-book months ago and just got around to reading it now. So, instead of looking up the book and finding out what it was about, I just looked at the cover. I've done this before and sometimes it works out great and sometimes not so great.

In this case, let's just say that I guessed completely wrong. On the cover, the book is described as a "haunting page-turner that kept me up, spine shivering..." So, I expected a scary or thrilling book. I think the problem I had with the book was the fairies. I didn't expect the book to include fairies. Andhere were times when I wasn't sure if the fairies were supposed to be real or not. I guess trying to figure that out was part of the suspense of the book. But I just didn't buy into it.

The author did a great job of tying the characters together from the three different times the time before Lisa was abducted, the time (15 years ago) when Phoebe first found out about the abduction and the present day when Phoebe is a grown woman living with her boyfriend. The twists and turns are interesting and kept me guessing until the end. But I can't say that I was ever on the edge of my seat. In the end, the author does wrap up all the loose ends nicely.

Recommended to
If you are looking for a book about fairies or a book about mysterious happenings, you might want to give this book a try. But, if you are looking for a haunting page-turner, well there are better options. Perfect example of don't judge a book by it's cover. And proof that you can't always trust reviewers. ;)
