This Scottish Tale has a handsome hero and a kind, brave Scottish lass. Both the leads make this story engaging but it is the heroine who really shines in this tale.

Lachlan MacMillan must marry and he sails to Kilgorra island intending on marrying the liaird's oldest daughter. Instead of being smitten by Catriona, he is enchanted by her step-sister Anna. Whereas Catriona is rude, selfish and bratty, Anna is generous, sincere and loyal. Anna is a servant in the castle to her sister. She meets Lachlan when he saves her friend from her abusive spouse. She is drawn to Lachlan instantly but knows he is there to court her sister.

Lachlan is not impressed with Catriona but he knows he needs to become the clan leader and take care of the islanders but there is a rival for Catriona's hand also on Kilgorra, making his courtship even more difficult, yet he simply cannot stay away from Anna.
Anna recognizes that Lachlan is needed on her island and wonders how she will ever be able to live on Kilgorra when Lachlan marries her vain sister. Even though the leads feel they have a hopeless romance they cannot stay away from each other.

Lachlan recognizes that it is Anna rather than Catriona who hold the hearts of the islanders and he finds his duty to be almost unbearable. The reader knows why this couple falls in love, Lachlan loves Anna's determined spirit and Anna loves Lachlan's strong sense of justice. From the beginning of the story to the end this couple is engaging and they have a fiery passionate romance

I truly expected to love this book based on the great reviews, but I ended up completely agreeing with the one person who gave it 2 1/2 stars. The characters ARE completely flat and one dimensional. I have no idea why Catriona was so evil, I know basically nothing about the hero who lamented his first love since they never even said why she was his love. Anna, the heroine, did not come off to me as a heroine. She came off as a woman who would do what any decent human being would do, i.e. she saved her cat from drowning. Who wouldn't? She defended her best friend from her abusive husband. So would I and I am no heroine. Just an ordinary everyday person. I actually wish I had not read it as I could have devoted those hours to a good book.
Great read, love all her books and always look forward to the next one! Hope it's very soon. Good read.
i couldn't put the book down. i like a fast moving and action packed book. the highlander's desire had all of that.
This book was a great read. Loved the story, the plot and the romance. The h was strong and brave despite the torture. I recommend this book.
I was very taken with the characters. Catarina and Anna were such a believable contrast as we're Lachan and Cullen. The story was very good but the difference between the characters kept the suspense going throughout the story. This an excellent read. It had everything I would want in a Highlander novel. I will retread it again and recommend it to all my friends.
Lachann MacMillan has traveled to Kilgorra to wed Catriona MacDuffie. He wants to be the Laird of his own realm so he's willing to take a bride he doesn't love. His heart was broken once and he vowed that it won't happen again. Upon landing he meets a maid, Anna MacIver and is attracted to her beauty and kindness. He doesn't know that Catriona hates her and wishes her harm. To further complicate matters, Lachann finds his arch-enemy, Cullen Macauley, wooing Catriona. The stage is set for treachery, deceit and desire. The story is a tale of good versus evil. Lachann and Anna are destined to be lovers but are kept apart by circumstances beyond their control. I loved the characters of Lachann and Anna. They are passionate and caring and determined to do what is right. Their romance is both tender and passionate. This is the first time that I've read Margo Maguire, but it won't be the last. She is a very talented storyteller.
I haven't read anything by this author before because reviews about her books always make them seem too modern to be historicals i.e. modern sexual attitudes and behaviour disguised as historical romance. I'm glad I tried this book despite one of the reviews making me think that this book would be too angsty. Actually it was a nicely paced book with a very honourable H and he treated the h very well. There truly wasn't any angst and it would have spoilt this book if there were. I think the h was sometimes a bit too good to be true and this was one of the things that cost the book the extra star. I also think that she should have stood up to her stepsister because there really wasn't much reason for her not to as far as I could see.

There were also one or 2 ludicrous plot devices e.g. the h was a Norwegian princess and her family arrive at a certain precise moment to come and take her away to marry some prince or other (after not looking for her for 20 years???). In the end it didn't put me off what was actually quite a nice story.
